In 2009, proposed state budget cuts put the health coverage
of one million California
children in jeopardy. However, thanks to the generosity
of the First 5
California Commission and the creativity of the state’s hospitals and local
health plans, policymakers, and the Managed Risk Medical
Insurance Board
(MRMIB, the agency that runs the Healthy Families Program), the shortfall in
the Healthy Families Program was filled.
In 2010, the Governor has yet again proposed state budget
cuts that – if enacted – could debilitate the Healthy Families and Medi-Cal
programs. Fortunately, the recently-enacted federal Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act further strengthens the incentives
for our state to protect
and expand children’s health coverage, and includes a requirement that
California
maintain its current eligibility standards, methodologies
and procedures for
Medi-Cal and Healthy Families.
We cannot let the health of our children be put at
risk anymore.
We must work with policymakers to identify a sustainable
funding source so that
no California
children go without the affordable, comprehensive health
coverage they need to
grow up healthy and strong.
